College football playoff projections, week 1: Alabama No.1, Florida State No.2

Jameis Winston had a slow start for Florida State

Jerry Palm of CBS Sports, released his first college football playoff projections on Wednesday.  Every week, Jerry Palm will project the four teams that should make it into the playoffs if the regular season ended.  We will breakdown the teams and the match ups, in addition to showcasing two teams on the verge of making the top four.

1. Alabama Crimson Tide: Some people believe that the Alabama struggles against West Virginia are a concern.  However, Palm has the Crimson Tide rated No.1. Alabama beat the Mountaineers 33-23 but this game was close to coming down to the wire.  Blake Sims was more than adequate at the quarterback position, but Alabama has not decided on their season long starter.  Defensively, Alabama continues to struggle with up tempo offenses.

2. Florida State Seminoles: The Seminoles are the defending national champion.  They beat a promising Oklahoma State Cowboys team 37-31 after jumping out to a 17-0 lead.  Jameis Winston did throw two interceptions, but he had a game reassuring touchdown run in the second half.  The Seminoles defense started out great, but Oklahoma State's speed had them on their heels from the second quarter on.

3. Oklahoma Sooners. The Sooners had an easy victory of Louisiana Tech.  We learned that Oklahoma should be explosive offensively, and even without Mixon, they'll have plenty of running back depth this season.  Other than that, Oklahoma is just waiting until a couple tough games in the Big 12.

4. Oregon Ducks: We will know a lot more about the Oregon Ducks next week.  They have the toughest game on paper in the first two weeks when Michigan State visits Autzen Stadium on Saturday.  Last week's game was just a tune up, and the game against the Spartans could be a preview of the national championship game.

Sugar Bowl: Alabama vs. Oregon- The college football world has been waiting for this game in recent years. Unfortunately, Oregon hasn't been able to win the PAC-12 North in the last two seasons, but with the new playoff format, the chances of this epic contest increases.  Note that this game would be played in SEC country.  That's a home field advantage for Alabama.

Rose Bowl: Florida State vs. Oklahoma- The Seminoles had to replace quite a few parts and it showed in the running game.  Oklahoma has had a couple key players suspended for the season.  If each team gets to this spot in January, expect a high scoring, and exciting game.

Two Teams to watch:

The Georgia Bulldogs had an impressive week with a victory over Clemson.  After one week, they are the favorite to win the SEC East.  If that happens, they'll take their chances in the SEC Championship game. They also have the best player in college football right now.

Michigan State has their chance to move into the first four next week.  If they are able to go into Autzen Stadium and come out with a win, the Spartans will be a heavy favorite to make the playoffs in 2014.
